Life has to go forward

Treacle heading towards 8 weeks pregnant
Today learning for the first time ever that I have bred a Cavalier with Symptomatic Syringomyelia (SM) has come as a not very pleasant pill to swallow. I've no doubt I have bred Cavaliers in the past with SM, but it probably was before it was really understood what it is.
Life though has to go forward and I believe that careful cross breeding will bring the dividend of improvement of health for these lovely little dogs. So some photos of the Poundlane pack this afternoon, including Treacle who is on her way to 8 weeks pregnant.

Dear Jane, So sorry to hear how the news about a Cavalier with SM has affected you. Bob our dear Cavalier was also diagnosed with SM
(not bred by you) but he never had severe symptoms and lived a very
happy active life, only passing away to Cancer at the age of 12. Without the cancer he would have gone on without any problems. Perhaps he could even have reached the grand old age of our first Cavalier Millie who passed away with a perfect heart at 16.
Jane it's the roll of the dice.
Kind Regards
Margaret

I totally agree with Margaret. You certainly shouldn't feel like a fraud. Yes, your puppies are put on a pedestal because of the care you take with breeding them and the attempts you are making to reduce the chances of them suffering from one of these conditions. However, all sensible people will understand that you can't offer guarantees of health, only reduce the odds and ensure a general improvement of those exaggerated features that make cavaliers prone to these horrible illnesses.
Obviously my heart goes out to the family of this poor dog who's just been diagnosed. I hope they succeed in managing the condition and have a similar outcome with it to Margaret's dog.

Sounds like one of those awful days. I agree with Margaret and Laura's comments - they have put it very well. We can't predict or control everything in this world - only do our very best. I think people will admire your honesty for putting it out there on your blog. Caroline
