PicturePrimrose and her growing belly
Primrose is now over 8 weeks pregnant and from previous photos of her especially compared with the size of Smudge before having her nine pups, she hardly looks pregnant.
So today I nursed her while my husband got a couple photos of her, which shows she is most definitely pregnant.  She is a nice size at this stage. You can't compare her with Smudge when pregnant, because Smudge was carrying an above average size litter for this breed, so was a lot bigger than you would generally see a Cavalier bitch at full term.
I started taking Primrose's temperature on Friday, so now waiting for that drop in temperature, that indicates that a bitch will whelp in around 24 to 48 hours.

Dear Zvis,

the best way to be sure, if you are not experienced in breeding from dogs is to speak with your vet. At around 21 to 28 days they can give them a scan just the same as a pregnant woman would have. This will confirm pregnancy. I find scanning later around 28 days after last mating gives a pretty definite diagnosis of whether or not pregnant, earlier may be inconclusive as the fetuses not so mature and do not image so well. Around 28 days from a last mating should give you a good enough image to confirm for sure if they are pregnant and roughly how many they are carrying and heart beats can be seen for each pup.

Around 28 to 32 days if an experienced dog breeder on palpating the abdominal area gently you can feel pea size balls in a string if pregnant. Before scanning, this was the only way to diagnose pregnancy in the earlier stages. If they are carrying only one or two pups though and tend to tuck up their stomach when examined, they may not be felt and it is the least accurate of the two methods. If you want to be sure get the dog scanned around 28 days after last mating.

If this is an accidental pregnancy, you are aware that a bitch can receive medication up until around 42 days after conception to terminate the pregnancy and you can find out more about this from your vet.

If you search on the internet about pregnancy in dogs, you will find a lot of information to help you and importantly help your dog.

Hope the above helps.

Kind regards

Jane Howarth
