Got home from milking this evening and sat down for five minutes with the dogs, just before husband, David served up a lovely Spaghetti Bolognese for supper. Molly catches the moment.

Treacle's pups 3 weeks old

A few photos of Treacle's pups now 3 weeks old.Their teeth are starting to come through their gums now and it looks like all of them have a nice scissor bite. Although some breeds have undershot bite as part of the breed standard, it is detrimental to the welfare of the dog, especially if severe.

Alfie in the Alps: Springtime

29/4/2016

Joan and Colin had one of Smudge's nine little Hudges (Not so little now though) born last year in April. They have a place out in France in the Alps region and send me updates of Alfie and the goings on in the Alps, which I feel are to good not to share.
"Hi Jane,

seeing poor skunky bear made me laugh quietly as it looks like the some of the huddles have a great need to eat their toys! Alfie has skanky teddy which he loved so much he has to eat a little bit of it every day so i'm on daily patch up duties. The lovely rabbit you gave him as a puppy now bears no resemblance to a rabbit, having no ears, no face, and is covered by layers of Colin's old walking socks so all that is left is the squeak! It must be in the genes.

I find now thats its best to give him nothing with stuffing.... the best toys for him being kong squeaky balls inside a sock and tied at the end! He loves to play and spends quite a lot of time tossing his toys up and then pouncing on them... a joy to watch.

He is enjoying his quartering activity up here in the mountains especially after a nice snow fall.I tried to film him yesterday, but my camera failed me... the batteries don't like cold so I need to get some special ones for cold conditions. Today we have full sun and blue skies, snow at our level has gone as quickly as it came, but on the mountain just behind us there is still and icing sugar dusting.

We had a spectacular avalanche near us last week, you wouldn't believe the noise it made.... deafening , all safe for us tho'. Colin is outside now building a high retaining wall of local rock so I hope we have no more snow as he's determined to get it finished.

The scenery this time of the year is spectacular as the shadows are very sharp and the grass is so green. The fields are full of yellow flowers, lots of dandelions but also celandine, coltsfoot, yellow anemones and masses of cowslips and primroses. and when they are peeping through the snow it's beautiful

There has been a lot of animal activity around us this spring. Last week we had 5 massive wild boars on the hillside opposite us, and we.ve also spotted eagles, buzzards, chamois, ibex and lots of small spring birds, crested tits, marsh its, blue tits, great tits, chaffinch, cuckoos, We even had a couple of swallows doing a reconoitering exercise last week but they departed very quickly as the flies will only arrive here when the cows come us!  I'm in my element here with binoculars and telescope at the ready!..... spring has definetely arrived! Hopefully the cows will come up next week, they are out in the fields at the foot of the mountain already, and the goats are out in the village.

We are a small scale cheese farming village mostly, although we get a lot  of walkers here too, as well as parapenters. The mountain behind us is called "The Tournette" We are even having the Tour de France come through the village this year which will be brilliant! We aim to be here for that! The village is called Montmin and it has its own small website with some nice photos.

I remember reading  one of your blogs from last year that one of Alfies litter mates spent some time at Annecy last year too, but I can't remember which one it was, and that he swam in the lake. I would love to contact his family to find out where they managed to let him swim, as a lot of the beaches around the lake don't allow it... it would be good to know for us.

In the meantime back to work doing some bread and cake baking for our visitors arrival this weekend.

Love and best wishes to you all

ps I'm loving the baking and cooking blogs. It looks like Florrie has a real talent.

Joan and Colin and not forgetting Alfie x"
I just received this video of the cows arriving today from Joan.

Alison sent me Birthday greeting yesterday for Millie's eight siblings who turned 4 years old on the 27th. Millie is from Smudge's first ever litter of Nine pups.
Thanks for the update and photos Alison. It was lovely to see you last year along with your Mother-in law who had Maddie from us. Hope you are all well.
"Hello Jane,

Hope you are all keeping well it's lovely seeing the new puppies growing.

Cannot believe Millie's now four the time has flown, wishing her siblings a happy birthday xx, have attached some recent photos and found some of when we visited you last year with Maddie.

She is still a constant delight and as the days and years go by the rules of the house seem to be diminishing she gets away with more than the children !

Look forward to continuing to see what's happening at Poundlane.

Bye for now

Alison and Millie xx"

Getting ready for school

Treacle's pups this morning in the video are now 20 days old and as you will see, not much getting ready for school was happening.
We put toys in with them for the first time this morning and the video is them playing with them for the first time.
And you will see contrary to rumours, that the big Ruby boy does do more than just eat and sleep.

I had to be to cricket practice with our son, Thomas tonight by 6 pm, so Florrie offered to get supper cooked and Bert helped her. Florrie made with help from her brother, Bert, a Spicy Potato and Vegetable Soup sprinkled with fried pieces of spam. She also made a batch of White Bread rolls to eat with the soup by the time we got back from cricket.

Joking aside and if you are taking your first visit to this website and wondering what the hell you have been watching in the video. What you are seeing is  Imprinting (of a young animal) come to recognize (another animal, person, or thing) as a parent or other object of habitual trust.

Just Poppy gazing deeply into the fire

Received a lovely photo today from Julie who has Poppy, who is from Dolly's litter born back the end of October 2011 Dolly amazes us again ! and opposite is a photo of Poppy at around right weeks old, just before she left us. She is also from the first litter that Reggie ever sired.
She is a full sister to Treacle, who is the Mum of the pups we have at the moment, but from the litter previous to Treacle, so she is now Auntie Poppy.

"Hi Jane,

The picture of Tilly looking out through the cat flap made me smile.  I then looked down to see what Poppy was up to and she was gazing deeply into the fire.  It's really cold here today so I'd put the fire on - she will always find the warmest spot in the house and, like the cats, will usually be found lying in a patch of sunlight if the fire's not on!

Loving the pictures and videos of the pups.

Julie x"
Thanks Julie for such a lovely photo of Poppy. It's been very cold here as well, especially this morning. I milked this morning and it was  3 Celsius when I got in the car to leave home and when I had finished milking and putting the cows out, we had a light dusting of sleety snow stuff. It did brighten up later, but still a sneaky cold wind.

Anyone who has been following this litter since birth will of seen the phenomenal growth pups make in the first weeks of life. Sixteen days ago these pups could not see or hear and were three times smaller than they are now. They could just drag themselves about. Now they can see (Although a bit blurry until around 28 days old), hear and can now wobbly walk and can get in a sitting position to poo.

I also got this funny photo of Tilly, Alfie's litter sibling. Karen had sent me photos and an update for Tilly yesterday on her 1st Birthday, telling about how Tilly likes to put her head through the cat flap and just stand there. Here is Tilly doing just that. Thanks Karen, it did make Molly smile.
"Morning Jane

I've attached a photograph for Molly.

Sometimes Tilly will actually sit down to make herself more comfortable!

Hope you all enjoyed celebrating Blottie and Bumbles birthday.

Best wishes

Karen"

Last dose of wormer

25/4/2016

This morning Treacle's pups had their last dose of their first time being treated for worms. You might wonder how pups get worms at this age and the source is Mum. They can get them from her whilst developing in the uterus and from her milk.
Even with worming the Mum you don't get rid of everything and we are learning that having a certain amount of Worms can actually have health benefits.
The problem is when the balance is wrong and with pups, worms can multiple quickly because they do not have a fully developed immune system and can cause them life threatening health issues, so it is very important to worm puppies.
