Interesting research featured on the Terrierman's Daily Dose in the blog entry The Genetic Load Unseen about a genetic study on dogs published on PLOS ONE.
My conclusion: The closer two dogs are related the higher likelihood that two recessive genes come together to create disease, outcrossing and crossbreeding do not stop the likelihood of two recessive genes coming together, but the chance is lessened very considerably. So line breeding aka inbreeding gives statistically greater risk for offspring with inherited disease, than outcrossing or crossbreeding.
