Over the last few years with the Kennel Club (KC) I had noted the subtle change in rhetoric. The KC had been sneaking in the words outcross and crossbreed without critisism in literature from them about breeding and you almost got a feeling that they were slowly dragging the KC into the 21st century, unfortunately though what I noted has also not gone unnoticed by the purist brigade.
At the last KC AGM there was a lot of anti anything other than purebreeding and purist evangelist Judge Jean Lanning proposed and won a motion to review the KC's acceptance and promotion of crossbreeds and went on to criticize the acceptance of imported dogs, as they may contain 'alien' blood, and even suggested that health concerns about purebred dogs was a veterinary plot. You couldn't make this shit up, could you ?
The Chairman of the KC Steve Dean, although I'm not a fan, has very very slowly been trying to teach the KC to walk forwards (better forwards than backwards, even if at a snails pace) over the last four years, but yesterday they thanked him with a big old step backwards, they booted him out in a re-election for the Chairmanship of the KC and in his place they have put what on paper looks like an evangelical purist Simon Luxmore.
Pedigree dogs exposed blog has wrote this blog on the situation http://pedigreedogsexposed.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/kc-chairman-ousted-members-revolting.html#comment-form
and also Dog World has this article on the change of Chairman at the KC
When you read the Dog World article and the bit were the KC decline to give voting figures, you have to ask , "Why ?" and then you take a look at the comment of the Judge Jean Lanning about the ousting of Steve Dean saying "I'm sure that under his stewardship goods things did happen. However, for far to many years a policy of defence had followed rather than to attack critics. The KC is an international beacon. It beholds us all to show some humility at this time and remember that no one is bigger than the KC"
Sorry Jean Lanning, you say, "show some humility" when your comment obviously lacks that and you want the KC to attack anyone who questions the KC. If you were really showing humility at this time Jean, you would of actually mentioned something you thought Steve Dean did that was good for the KC, but no, you go for the jugular and infer, that maybe he did nothing, as you can't off the top of your head at this time think of anything. As for you thinking no one is bigger than the KC, you might be surprised by how big a tree a little axe can fell.
Then it don't get any better with the comments by Judge Andrew Brace saying about the new Chairman, “The news that Simon Luxmore has been elected will hopefully be welcomed by the dog world at large,” he said. “We now have a chairman who is very much ‘one of us’, who comes with no conflicts of interest and who I believe will make full use of the expertise which surrounds him.
“He has a General Committee which includes several young visionaries and I believe that if the Committee gives Simon the support he deserves we really will see major change in the interests of the sport."
Sorry Judge Andrew Brace, the dog world at large really don't give a toss about who's running the KC. Oh, I forgot when you say, "dog world", you mean that little niche market in the dog world know as showing, which represents a very small percentage of dog ownership.
Note Judge Andrew Brace says that they now have a Chairman who is 'one of us' and I wonder what he means by that, but when he says, "with no conflicts" I must surmise that this is harking towards Judge Jean Lanning's conspiracy theory that health concerns with purebreeds is a veterinary plot, as Steve Dean the now ex Chairman is a vet. I would imagine if you were a plotting vet, you would not be worried about the health of purebreeds, because a healthy purebreed does not make the cash register go ka-ching !
And his final remark on seeing "major change in the interests of the sport." Speaks volumes about how far this appointment may drag the KC backwards, because it says loud and clear that it ain't about the dog it's about the sport (if you can call showing that).
So ousting Steve Dean has reflected the wishes of the KC membership, but the KC membership really need to ask themselves, "Do they reflect the best interests of dogs ?"
“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you,but he will make a fool of himself, too.”
