Smudge's pups at 4 days old
Finally got all the photos loaded of the pups from yesterday and today, along with a couple of Dad, Henry and a few of the children and me with the pups. Smudge and pups are all doing well. It's late so this is a quick blog. Enjoy !

Beautiful puppies. Are you noticing any further differences from the cross with the Brittany compared with a pure cavalier?

At the moment if you did not know, even a Cavalier breeder would not be able to tell that they were not pure Cavaliers.
The differences at this moment are subtle, but as they grow I hope we will see for me, positive differences from the pure. The head shape should be less extreme, the coat lessened and the we should see a bit of change in the ears hopefully less feathered and setting better for ventilation.
The pigmentation appearing on the noses so far is liver brown, which I expected, because Smudge has a black nose but in between her heat cycles her pigmentation lightens to almost liver colour and Henry's nose is liver brown.
It will be interesting to watch them grow and I can't wait to see them open their eyes, as then we will really start to see the development of their characters.

It'll certainly be interesting to see them develop. Thanks for the great photos. How does the character of the Brittany compare? We had a Cavalier when I was growing up and she was the sweetest natured dog ever. I imagine a Brittany to be more active and less of a lap dog, is that right? Although, having said that, our Bonny was very lively in her younger years. She lived to almost 15, so had slowed considerably in the end.

Yes, they will be active dogs. Smudge as a Cavalier has retained her distant ancestors appitude for flushing covers and with the Brittany being bred for pointing the mixture should make for offspring that would possible work, as well as be active family dogs.
We have found with Henry that the Brittany although active is a very soulful dog and has a lot in common with the Cavalier in the way it interacts and enjoys human company. Choosing a Brittainy hopefully these pups will retain a lot of what we love about the Cavalier, their temperament.

As a cavalier lover who wants a healthier breed I am fascinated.

Jane,
What a delight. The photos are exceptional. I love the black and white ones of you and some of the family. Really enjoyed looking at them. Thank you.
