Got a bit of catching up to do. With three baby dogs to bring on at the moment & running a busy family home by the evening I am very tired & the blog can wait but have got on the computer tonight before sleep engulfs me. We have 8 hello's tonight including two Cavalier boys Scrumpy & Oliver. Thanks all for the photo's & updates I also have a little bad news with being contacted by Alison to be told that Smudge's sister Maddie has been diagnosed with a Juvenile Cataract in one eye. It has been caught early & surgery for this condition has a very high success rate. Mum Millie & Dad Charlie of Maddie both have been anually eye tested for cataracts showing no signs & sister Smudge has been eye tested showing no signs of cataract but Mum & Dad must be gene carriers & Smudge could be a carrier to. A gene test for this condition in Cavalier's is in the pipeline & soon as it is available on my dogs will be tested. Millie is in pups now to Reggie our Miniature Poodle, so this should put the chance of her off spring having a cataract as very low as these pups will be crossbreeds, so the chance of doubling up of the gene's will be very unlikely. Pups from both litters will only go to strictly none breeding homes. It is never easy when you know you have bred a dog with a problem which you have tryed to avoid but it happens to the best of us. If you watched on Monday night on BBC 4 "Pedigree Dogs Exposed 3 years on" it is like the man said doing the genetics on boxers, "mutations occur in breeds but its what you do about it when you find out." If anyone caught the program on Monday night it might of been a bit of an eye opener but for me unfortunately reinforced all my fears about Show breeders. There are some very ugly people in the show world. The pug & all the flat faced breeds are simply dogs that should of never been allowed to be bred to this extreme but the show world lead by the Kennel Club have openly in the past encouraged these mutants to be bred. The show world should hang their heads in shame. Human vainity in all its grotesque glory. One thing I would like to say which the program did not is with Cavaliers that Syringomyelia is seen as not just a problem in Cavaliers but is seen as a small dog breed problem & that hopefully a gene test is in the pipeline. I also being around Cavaliers feel the heart problem is still more of a problem in Cavaliers & figures quoted for syringomyelia in Cavaliers could be a little over zealous although I would not play down the fact that this is a problem within this breed. In the programme Dalmation dilemma was interesting & I will give credit to The Kennel Club for allowing registration of this crossbreed dog because they have looked at the science & although the UK Dalmation Club where against it ruled on the side of sound scientific fact that will mean a healthier & happier Dalmation dog of the future. The American Kennel Club have yet to allow registration of these heathier crossbreed dogs who where crossbred over 14 generations ago in America. The problem is that with close breeding of these dogs a gene to control uric acid has been bred out of them. Dalmation's in the UK & USA are believed to be at almost zero level of dogs still with the gene to control uric acid. I say on my "All About Cavapoo" page that "I believe crossbreeding will be the saviour of many of the purebreeds in the future, so watch this space" but it seems that my prophecy is already here. All we need now is the Kennel Club to gentle open its doors to controlled crossbreeding & many purebreeds could have a bright, happy & above all healthier future. We are seriously considering not breeding pure cavaliers any more but trying to breed a similier type of dog with more genetic diversity, so hopefully with less chance of genetic disorders. This though needs more breeding stock than I can keep, so I would need to find other visionary breeders to do this which is easier said than done. Finally after all the doggy politics some photo's of Millie our Mum in waiting. She is now 6 weeks pregnant. She looks really well with being a good size already. Wants loads of cuddles which she gets with lots of tummy massage. Smudge & Reggie are very much in love at this moment. The sun is in the sky & love is in the air at Poundlane. Finally figured out why I could not download photo's onto my blog. So tonight a lot of photo's of the three musketeers Belle (formerly Izzabel), Toby & Jessica. These three pups are growing & developing well. Toby & Jessica from the photo's you can see are starting to get into their lanky stage being all legs. Belle does not look lanky due to her fluffy coat which disguises her growing limbs. These three little reprobates love nothing more than killing toilet rolls & I have now lost count off the number of times I have picked up shreds of toilet roll all over the bathroom, kitchen or living room but could be worse. Today we had some lovely sunshine although a little chilly still but it gave me a chance to get some photo's of the three musketeers outside enjoying spring in the air. Millie is going on well now just over 4 weeks pregnant & is already visiable pregnant. Millie is a very loving dog but when pregnant goes into loving overdrive & just loves nestling into you as soon as you sit down.
Smudge who is Millie's has just come on heat in the last couple days so she will be around 6 weeks behind her mum. I have had a bit of a weekend off of the computer but will hope to catch up emailing everyone over the next couple days. Lastly Tracey, Charlie is going on fine with no change in his grade 1 to 2 heart murmer. Izzabel we now call Belle due to her mum having the same sounding name, she is going on well & at this time hopefully she will not need surgery. Hope all is well with you Tracey. One of Bella's sisters says "Hello !" tonight. Sadie is settling in well & Terence has remarked on how quick she is to learn as they have had Cavaliers before. Thanks for the lovely photo & letting me know how well she is getting on. The next two to say "Hello !" are Spencer & Henry who are brothers & have only left us a couple days. Henry is settling well with Janet who is an experienced dog owner & from the photo's he looks very happy with himself. Thanks Julie for sending me such lovely photo's of your Mum's Henry. Trish has also sent a lovely group of photo's of Spencer. It is Trish's first ever dog so on a learning curve but sounds like you are doing really well with Spencer who from the photo's already looks very much part of the furniture. Thanks Trish for the photo's & update. Yesterday Smudge & Millie went to Tavistock for their annual eye check. They where given the all clear showing no signs of hereditary cataract or multifocal retinal dysplasia.
Millie is booked to be scanned on the 15th February in the morning, so my fingers will be firmly crossed until then. Some lovely snowy updates tonight with Edward & Roxy. Edward has been out & meet his first snow with Dawn saying he has loved it & has rolled in it, eaten it & skidded on it. Edward has become a part of the family & is a fast learner & a pleasure to have around the house. He certainly looks a star & has rather a cheeky look on his face in the photo of him wearing his dapper coat. Roxy has been out in the snow & although it might not be the first snow for her as she was born last year with snow on the ground I think it might be her first that she is old enough to go out & play in it. Thanks for the updates & very sweet photo's. Spencer left us yesterday & is now settling into his new home. Henry who leaves tomorrow for his new home. We will have Belle, Toby & Jessica to work on now getting then leading & learning them basic commands. Took a little video of Belle out in the little snow we have had which is now gone. Belle was running around like a nutter with Dad Reggie so I ran & got the camera to catch this very funny moment & as you will see in the video I just caught the tail end !
Struggling along at the moment as on Sunday after Honey left for her new home my throat started to feel sore & within a couple hours I was shivering with the cold & the glands under my chin either side of my neck where like marbles & very sore. Not much difference some four days later which has worn me down a little but its amazing how you can keep going with round the clock over the counter medication. Feels a bit like flu & have not felt this rough for around 12 years when I got flu carrying my first child & I was 7 months pregnant. Anyway enough my self pity. Toby, Mojo & Honey left us last weekend for their new homes. Have heard from Mojo's new home already & all seems well as Mojo settles into his new family. This saturday will see Spencer leave & then on Monday Henry will leave for his new home. Just keeping these two on an extra week you can see the personalities develop even more with Spencer being a quite confident but laid back boy. Henry is a little more reserved than Henry but has found his voice the last couple days & you can play with him & he will vocalise his joy with you woofing at him & him returning your woofs in a friendly playful woof. Have some lovely photo's of pups from Dolly's & Ysabel's litters born back the end of October 2011 & beginning of November 2011. Alfie I think you could say has a bit of the Reggie about him. Apart from a bit of a scare when Alfie impaled a piece of twig up his nose he is doing really well & the commands Tony & Gina have taught him are a credit to them. This crossbreed does enjoy learning & stimulation of their brain is an important factor for a pup as just like a human when young they are like a sponge & if taught right from wrong can amaze you at what they can learn with a bit of positive encouragement. Next is photo's of Alfie's litter sibling Poppy. She is such a pretty little Poppet & she too has been showing Julie & her family how quick she can learn & how social she is. They have two cats & the youngest cat is almost at the stage of playing with her. Lastly is Ysabel's Otis who loves bubbles & wants to make friends with the cat who is not so sure of him yet. Corrie says " he is really part of the family & a bundle of fun!" He has been a bit nippy playing but Corrie has read up on steps to discourage this when playing with him & things are going well. Lastly tonight Millie who we hope to be at least a couple weeks in pup now is really well & we will hope to scan her around the 14th Feb, so fingers crossed. She has been incredible loving the last couple days but if in or not in pups after coming of heat her hormones for around 4 to 5 weeks after coming of heat will make her body think she is in pups regardless of if she is or isn't, so any change in temperment is to be expected in a bitch after just being in heat. It just a waiting game now !
