Dry eye can be a very painful condition for dogs and it looks like there is hope in curative treatment, reading research reported on CavalierHealth.org website Brazilian ophthalmologisty surgeons transplant lip salivary glands to dogs' inner eye lids to cure dry eye. And this treatment hopefully should not be to hard to access according to their conclusions, "We found a significant clinical improvement in cases of moderate to severe KCS, as well as those which were nonresponsive to medical treatment, as evidenced by clinical examination and statistical tests. Transplantation of labial salivary glands showed that lubrication of the ocular surface by salivary secretion is stable and effective. ... This technique is simple, quick and effective, accessible to any veterinary ophthalmologist surgeon and is of great value for moderate and severe cases of dry keratoconjunctivitis not responsive to medications."

That's amazing! I'm sure some of my human dry eye patients at the eye unit would love a solution like this. It is a horribly uncomfortable condition, so, lucky dogs who have this procedure done!
